The Five Sessions

The Public Speaking Program consists of five Sessions. During these five sessions, we will cover the following aspects of Public Speaking: body language, use of voice, structure, rhetoric, and framing. In order to get more of an insight into the curriculum, please find below what you can expect going into each session!

Attendance in 4 out of 5 sessions is required to obtain the Public Speaking Certificate.

Session I

Session I – Body Language

During Session I we will focus on one of the fundamentals of public speaking, body language. The following aspects will be discussed, amongst others:

  • Body posture
  • Use of hands
  • Eye contact
  • Facial expressions

Additionally, you will be putting the theory into practice with impromptu speeches!

Session II

Session II – Use of Voice

During Session II we will delve in to how your voice plays a crucial role in getting your message across. The following aspects will be discussed, amongst others:

  • Rate
  • Volume
  • Pitch
  • Tone

You will be putting these techniques to the test by performing prepared speeches!

Session III

Session III – Pitching & Presenting

During Session III, our focus shifts from the universal techniques of public speaking to the special cases of presenting and pitching. The following aspects will be discussed, among others:

  • Giving presentation
  • Pitching yourself
  • Being memorable

While doing some presenting exercises, you will immediately practice these skills!

Session IV

Session IV – Rethorics & Framing

During Session IV we will teach you how to make your speech nice to listen to, by focusing on rhetorical devices. The following aspects will be discussed, amongst others:

  • Ethos
  • Logos
  • Pathos
  • Rhetorical devices
  • Framing

You will put these newly acquired rhetorical skills to good use with a framing exercise and longer prepared speeches.

Session V

Session V – Public Speaking Marathon or Debate

During Session V we will combine all of the previously learnt skills into one large public speaking marathon, to get as much practice in as possible. Additionally, we will be doing a debate in which you get to go back and forth with your fellow participants.
